JUNE NEWSLETTER

May and June have been busy so far with our son Jacob returning from college for the summer and Sam finishing up Spring semester here on Friday. I have been studying along with them in my UC Davis viticulture for winemakers class. Yesterday I was at the Grape Day research conference starting at 7:30 am in the vineyard with someone speaking about the experiments being done with different rootstocks affecting vine growth on Cabernet Sauvignon in Oakville. Did you know that grape vines are hermaphroditic or self-pollinating? Many flowering plants are, and in the lower pictures, you can see what the new cluster looks like before and after flowering. This is a critical time for watering, so we added extra water before last week’s heat spike. The next stage is fruit set, as we will begin to get a sense of the crop with the green berries swelling.
